The sample to be analyzed is illuminated by a polarized illumination. The light is reflected (specular reflection) and scattered (volume scattering) by the sample. The specular reflected light keeps the same polarization as the illumination and the volume scattered light becomes un-polarized.

SAMBA acquires successively at video rate the parallel (P) and crossed (C) polarization state for each pixel of the image. The parallel image contains the specular (S) image and half of the volume scattered (V) image. The crossed image contains half of the volume scattered (V) image. This allows the calculation of different parameters i.e. the Gloss G and the Gloss degre Gd given by G = P - C (= S) and Gd = G/(P+C).
